Vimoh's Blog: How to follow the conversation?

  • nimbupani · 1 year ago
Maybe it is time to just get people on to friendfeed and follow all conversations there! I was thinking if it were possible to integrate the search.twitter.com results for your own username into friendfeed, then it would be easier to follow twitter conversations as well.

    But facebook is another beast!

For most (and for me as well) Friendfeed doesn't work for two reasons. The people I need are not there. They are on Facebook. Secondly, FF needs to become less bewildering. Facebook can become a little friendfeed. It allows integration of various web services like Google reader, Stumbleupon, Last.FM, Flickr, Picasa etc.

And you CAN integrate Twitter search feed for your own name into FF. Just pick up the RSS feed for the search and let FF pull it.

I agree with you that the "echo chamber" can get really anoying. And every echo that does not provide new information becomes more meaningless fluff to sift through.

I don't think that we can put our hope for an answer to this problem in new technology. Whatever new technology or site that comes out, there will alway be those who try to milk the system for every last bit of short term value.

I think it is up to each one of us to make the social web into what we wish it to be.

I agree that there will always be those out to milk the system (that's us by the way - the system AND the milkmaids). I think the focus of the question has shifted from getting feedback to distinguishing feedback from noise. That of course depends on us (as you said).

Any comments that I post on FriendFeed, on a Disqus thread, stay on FriendFeed. It isn't true 'sharing'. Whatever happens on FriendFeed stays on FriendFeed. The same could be said for so many web services. People of one service have little clue of what's happening in another service.

Thanks to your post, my original question "where should I share a link" gets answered easily. There's usually a different crowd and a different set of people I know on each service; where to share depends on who all I wish to share the link with. It's gonna end up on FriendFeed either way. Sharing on FriendFeed directly is kinda pointless for me.

Still, a few more questions remain unanswered. Where does one share photos, on Flickr, Tumblr or Facebook? Only Flickr retains the original photo quality, from what I know. Hmph...

Where you share your photos would depend on why you want to share them. If you are a pro photog and want to showcase your work then Flickr and/or Picasa work fine.

If you are a casual clicky (like me) and don't care about quality or art and just want to send them to your friends, then Facebook or even Friendfeed directly work ok.

Thanks for the reply. That answers my question perfectly.
